A kitchen doesn't have to just be a functional space, there are so many beautiful ways to style areas of your kitchen to give it some personality and showcase some gorgeous accessories.
Some people say the kitchen is the heart of a home. A kitchen can be a functional space where food is prepared and cooked, dishes washed and clothes cleaned. However, we don't always think of the kitchen as a place we can style using accessories to inject some more personality and interest to the space. You can have lots of fun styling both functional and decorative accessories in a kitchen, adding textures, colours and greenery to soften the overall look and feel of the room.
The first step to styling your kitchen is to make sure you select items that are in keeping with the style of your kitchen and home. If you have a more traditional or country style kitchen with shaker doors, you may want to select some rustic stoneware accessories. If you have a modern or contemporary kitchen, you could use accessories that complement this style, such as glazed vases or glass candle holders. You can also select metals to match your hardware and handles, for example if you have gold on your cupboard handles, why not select some gold candle holders to tie in with this.
The key to planning your accessories is to make sure they are a suitable size for your kitchen and won't interfere with your preparation or cooking space or you will end up having to move them every time you are preparing food. With this in mind, it's good to think about using accessories in a functional way as well as them being aesthetically pleasing. For example, if you've found a lovely rustic vase to go in your kitchen, instead of adding flowers to the vase, could this be used as a utensil holder instead?
You can be really creative in the kitchen, but here's some ideas to transform your kitchen using a selection of stunning decorative accessories.
1. Make a statement with floral arrangements
Bouquets and vases are a great way to make a statement in your kitchen. Choose a vase and bouquet to suit the size of the space you have available and the style of your kitchen. If you have an island or peninsular then a large vase and bouquet will make a stunning feature for the space. If you have a smaller area you are looking to fill, jug vases work perfectly in kitchens with some seasonal simple stems such as eucalyptus, tulips or spring blossom. Potted plants and succulents also look gorgeous in kitchens, adding a pop of greenery without taking up too much space. If you have a more traditional or country style kitchen, rustic ceramics are perfect to suit this style. For a more modern or contemporary feel, opt for glazed vases.
2. Use decorative bowls to display fruit
Decorative bowls are a great way to display functional objects such as fruit and veg, making them a feature within the kitchen. You can use a range of materials such as wood or ceramics, depending on your style and the look you are after. Using a tall bowl or a bowl stood on a stack of decorative books can also bring some height to a space. Using chopping boards propped up against the wall is another way of introducing texture and interest to a space.
3. Create a beautiful vignette in a kitchen nook with rustic accessories
If you have a corner of your kitchen that you are not quite sure how to style, you can create a beautiful vignette by placing a few accessories together, transforming a plain space. Accessories that work really well in these kind of spaces are bottle vases to introduce patterns, rustic jugs to bring texture, decorative or cookery books for height and candle holders for light and warmth. Another technique is to use trays to frame the accessories within the space. A great example of this is placing some lovely bottles of hand wash and dish wash on a tray to the side of your kitchen sink, making what is a functional item look beautifully styled.
