Enjoying delicious food and drink with loved ones is a big part of the Christmas celebrations. Styling an enchanting tablescape can instantly create a warm ambiance and make your dining experience even more special.
As family and friends gather round for food and drink, the dining table becomes a central part of the Christmas celebrations. Styling a festive tablescape will create a warm atmosphere and ambiance to elevate the dining experience for your guests as you enjoy delicious food and share stories together.
A tablescape works best when it is an extension of your existing interior style and Christmas scheme, so this is a great place to start when planning your design.
We've put together this quick and simple guide to creating your own beautiful festive table display.
Selecting beautiful table linens
The table linens are the foundation on which to build the rest of your table styling. Depending on your personal preference, you can use a tablecloth or a table runner for the base of your tablescape. Fabric placemats are a great way to start to build layers and interest to your design, bringing a lovely texture to your table. Finally, napkins are a practical yet beautiful addition to a table display. You can get really creative in the way that you fold your napkins and add napkin rings, ribbons and accessories to really personalise your design. The colour and design of your linens should reflect your style and colour scheme. Using a neutral colour palette here allows you to use them all year round and just change the accessories to suit the seasons.
Timeless glassware and crockery
Next comes the glassware and crockery. We recommend setting the table ready for your guests with a charger plate, dinner plate and either a side plate or bowl depending on your menu. Layering the crockery in this way gives a lovely effect similar to what you would experience in a high-end restaurant. Again the colour scheme and design of your crockery should tie in to the rest of your style. We recommend investing in a neutral diner set as it can be used throughout the seasons and will go with most accessories. Setting out wine glasses ready for your guests arrival completes the look.
A striking centrepiece
The centrepiece of your table will be the main focal point for your guests and at Christmas time it's nice to bring in a natural touch using green foliage. Depending on the shape of your table, you can either use a wreath or a garland as your main centrepiece and then build the rest of the accessories and styling from there. Adding Christmas baubles and ornaments into the wreath or garland brings even more texture and intrigue to the centrepiece. Battery operated fairy lights amongst the greenery will add a warm light and even more sparkle!
Adding candles for light & warmth
Candles are a wonderful way of giving the table a soft light and creating a warm feeling for the duration of the dining experience. With so many different types of candle holders and candle sticks available, you can play around with the many different options to see what works best for your table. Candlesticks are a great way to bring height to your centrepiece (just don't use anything too high that will block the view of your guests). Small tealight holders dotted throughout your centrepiece are another great way to bring delicate light to your table. Using Christmas scented candles with orange, cinnamon and clove fragrances will further add to the ambiance and bring a feeling of nostalgia.
The finishing touches
It's the little details that will make the most memorable tablescapes. We love writing out place cards for our guests using ornaments such as miniature baubles, snowflakes or pine cones to hold the name cards. Personalise your scheme by placing festive themed accessories on top of the napkins. If you really want to go that extra mile, you can even add small favours or Christmas crackers for your guests to enjoy.
